Washington D.C is the capital city of the United States. It’s situated on the East Coast of the country. Washington D.C is among the world’s great cities and one of the most politically significant. It is the country’s political, transportation, and cultural centre. Since its foundation, Washington D.C is renowned for influencing other cities around the world. It is famous for its astounding architecture and structures that stand side by side to complement each other. Some of the places that make it famous include the amazing buildings, the White House, the Capitol, National Mall, Smithsonian Museums, and the Lincoln Memorial.
Census in the United States is done after every 10 years and 2010 was the last time that it was conducted. The next census was scheduled for 2020. According to the 2010 census, Washington D.C had a population of 601,723. When it comes to religious beliefs, Washington D.C is fairly diverse. According to the data collected during the 2010 census, 76% people in Washington D.C identified themselves as Christian, 2.9% as Jewish, 1.9% as Buddhist, 1% as Hindu, and 0.6% as Other religions. On the other hand, 17% of respondents declared that they followed no religion. English is the primary language spoken in Washington D.C, although there are communities who speak Spanish, French, and several other languages.
The local government of Washington D.C is unique in that it serves as a state, county, and municipal government. The Mayor of the District of Columbia is the head of the executive branch. The Council of the District of Columbia is the legislative branch and is composed of 13 members. The District also sends a non-voting delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives. Unlike other cities, the federal government has the authority to review and overrule laws created by the city government and residents of the District do not have voting representation in the federal government.
Washington D.C has a growing, diversified economy with an increasing percentage of professional and business service jobs. The gross state product of the District in 2018-Q2 was $141 billion, which is about 0.8 percent of the total U.S. GDP. The largest sectors of non-federal employment are law, lobbying, non-profit organizations, higher education, healthcare, and scientific research. The District has growing industries not directly related to government, especially in education, finance, public policy, and scientific research.
Washington D.C’s infrastructure is very comprehensive and includes an extensive network of public transportation including the Washington Metro, numerous highways and bridges, two airports, and strong regional train service. The city also has a comprehensive plan for its future infrastructure growth known as the DC 2050 plan. This plan includes strategies for new energy, water and sewerage infrastructure, to enhanced digital connectivity and new rail and road schemes.
