Seoul is the capital city of South Korea. It’s situated in the northwest part of South Korea. Seoul is among the oldest of the world’s great cities and one of the most cosmopolitan. It is the country’s economic, transportation, and cultural centre. Since ancient times, Seoul is renowned for influencing other cities around the world. It is famous for its astounding traditional buildings and modern structures that stand side by side to complement each other. Some of the places that make it famous include the amazing ancient buildings, N Seoul Tower, Gyeongbokgung Palace, National Museum of Korea, and the Lotte World Tower.
Census in South Korea is done after every 5 years and 2020 was the last time that it was conducted. The next census is scheduled for 2025 in South Korea. According to the 2020 census, Seoul had a population of 9,724,496. Compared to other cities in South Korea, Seoul is considered to be more diverse. When it comes to religious beliefs, Seoul is known to be diverse as most people identify themselves as Buddhist, Christian, and Confucian. According to the data collected during the 2020 census, 29.3% people in Seoul identified themselves as Buddhist, 18.3% as Christian, and 0.9% as Confucian. On the other hand, 51.5% of respondents declared that they followed no religion. As one of the most diverse cities in the world, Seoul houses over 9 million residents, who collectively speak various languages, including Korean, English, Mandarin and Japanese. The Gyeongbokgung Palace is one of the most iconic landmarks in Seoul. It was the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty. The Lotte World Tower is the tallest building in South Korea and the 5th tallest in the world.
The local government of Seoul operates under a mayor-council system. The mayor is elected to a four-year term by the citizens of Seoul. The Seoul Metropolitan Council is the legislative body and is composed of 104 members who are elected to four-year terms. The local government is responsible for education, transportation, public safety, recreational facilities, sanitation, water supply, and welfare services.
Seoul has always been a commercial city and today enjoys the status of having one of the largest city economies in the world. The city thrives in trade and commerce and has a vibrant culture steeped in commerce. It has a GDP of over $370 billion, which is about 19 percent of South Korea's total GDP. The size of its economy is larger than that of several Asian nations. The Port of Incheon, which is administered by the city of Incheon, handles 2.68 million TEUs of cargo every year.
Seoul Metropolitan Government took positive steps with its draft Seoul infrastructure plan 2040. The Mayor of Seoul took a big step forward in planning for growth with the publication of the Seoul’s Infrastructure Plan 2040. It identifies a range of infrastructure priorities for Seoul, from new energy, water and sewerage infrastructure, to enhanced digital connectivity and new subway, rail and road schemes. Some of the investment is provided by the private sector, through the privatized utilities. This has worked well in Seoul, although business is particularly concerned at the lack of capacity in digital infrastructure.
