Mexico City is one of the oldest and most populous cities in the Americas and one of the most cosmopolitan. It is the country’s economic, transportation, and cultural center. Since the time of the Aztecs, Mexico City is known for influencing other cities around the world. It is famous for its fascinating ancient structures and modern buildings that stand side by side to complement each other. Some of the places that make it famous include the amazing ancient ruins, the Angel of Independence, Plaza de la Constitución, Art Galleries, the Palace of Fine Arts, Chapultepec Castle and the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

According to the 2020 census, Mexico City had a population of 21,671,908, making it the most populous city in the country. According to the census, 47.9% of the population is male and 52.1% is female. When it comes to religious beliefs, Mexico City is predominantly Catholic, but also diverse as most people identify themselves as Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, and other religions. According to the data collected during the 2020 census, 82.7% people in Mexico City identified themselves as Catholic, 9.1% as Protestant and Evangelical, 1.8% other religions, and 6.4% declared that they followed no religion. As one of the most diverse cities in the Americas, Mexico City houses over 21 million residents, who collectively speak a variety of languages, including Nahuatl, Mixtec, Zapotec, and of course Spanish. The Angel of Independence, one of Mexico City's most iconic monuments, was built to commemorate the centennial of the beginning of Mexico's War of Independence.

The administration of Mexico City is outlined in the Constitution of Mexico, where it is defined as a federal entity with a level of autonomy comparable to that of the states. The government of Mexico City is composed of two levels: the Head of Government of Mexico City, who has executive powers, and the Legislative Assembly, which has legislative powers. The Head of Government is elected by the citizens for a period of six years, with no possibility of reelection. The Legislative Assembly is composed of 66 deputies, 40 of which are elected by first-past-the-post system and 26 by proportional representation. The government is responsible for public education, social services, water supply, public transportation, and traffic, among other services.

Economy

Mexico City has always been a commercial city and today enjoys the status of having one of the largest city economies in the Americas. The city thrives in trade and commerce and has a vibrant culture steeped in commerce. It has a GDP of over $411 billion USD, which is about 15.8 percent of Mexico's total GDP. The size of its economy is larger than that of several Latin American nations. The Port of Veracruz, which serves Mexico City, handles 27 million tons of cargo every year.

Infrastructure

Mexico City's government has implemented various infrastructure plans to accommodate its growing population and economic importance. Some of the major projects include new energy, water and sewerage infrastructure, enhanced digital connectivity and new metro, bus and road schemes. Some of the investment is provided by the private sector, through privatized utilities. However, there are concerns regarding the lack of capacity in digital infrastructure. The issue of high-speed broadband access is a priority for businesses, as it is comparatively low compared to other major cities. These are priority areas for action by the Mayor.
