Lahore is among the oldest cities in the world and one of the most multicultural in South Asia. It is the country’s economic, transportation, and cultural centre. Since the Mughal era, Lahore is renowned for influencing other cities around the world. It is famous for its astounding medieval architecture and modern structures that stand side by side to complement each other. According to the data collected during the 2017 census, 96.4% people in Lahore identified themselves as Muslim, 2.7% as Christian and 0.9% of respondents declared that they followed other religions. The city houses over 11 million residents, who collectively speak several languages, including Punjabi, Urdu, English, and other regional languages.

Administration

The administration of Lahore is coordinated by the Lahore Metropolitan Corporation and the District Government. The Mayor of Lahore, who has executive powers, and the Metropolitan Corporation, who scrutinize the Mayor's decisions and can accept or reject his budget proposals each year. The Corporation is responsible for strategic planning, policing, the fire service, most aspects of transport and economic development. The district government is responsible for local services not overseen by the Corporation, such as local planning, schools, social services, local roads and refuse collection.

Lahore has always been a commercial city and today enjoys the status of having one of the largest city economies in Pakistan. The city thrives in trade and commerce and has a vibrant culture seeped in commerce. The size of its economy is larger than that of several South Asian cities. Lahore is also the largest software producing city in Pakistan and hosts a burgeoning IT industry.

Infrastructure

Lahore has been taking positive steps to improve its infrastructure. The city's infrastructure includes an extensive road network, a bus rapid transit system, and a major international airport, Allama Iqbal International Airport. The Lahore Metro, a rapid transit system built under the Lahore Metro Project, was inaugurated in 2020. The city is also home to the Lahore Stock Exchange, one of the major stock exchanges in the country. Lahore has a robust telecommunications infrastructure with widespread access to broadband internet.
