Kolkata is the capital city of West Bengal, India. It’s situated in the eastern part of India. Kolkata is one of the oldest cities in India and one of the most culturally rich. It is the state’s economic, transportation, and cultural centre. Since the colonial era, Kolkata is renowned for influencing other cities around the world. It is famous for its astounding colonial architecture and modern structures that stand side by side to complement each other. Some of the places that make it famous include the amazing ancient buildings, Victoria Memorial, Indian Museum, Eden Gardens, Howrah Bridge and the Marble Palace.
The administration of Kolkata is based on a Mayor–Council system. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation, or KMC, oversees and manages the civic infrastructure of the city's 16 boroughs, which together encompass 144 wards. Each ward elects a councillor to the KMC. The Mayor, in turn, is elected by the councillors from among themselves. The Mayor and the Deputy Mayor, also elected from among the councillors, form the executive branch and the Mayor holds the executive powers. The KMC is responsible for strategic planning, policing, the fire service, most aspects of transport and economic development. The state government, headed by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, maintains duties such as law and order and health.
Kolkata has always been a commercial city and today it has a significant place in the economy of West Bengal and India. The city thrives in trade and commerce and has a vibrant culture steeped in commerce. It contributes about 25 percent of the state's total GDP. The size of its economy is larger than that of several Indian states. The Port of Kolkata handles 54.5 million tons of cargo every year.
Kolkata's infrastructure is a mix of modern and colonial-era establishments. The city is well-connected by rail, road and air. The Kolkata Metro, India's first underground railway system, has significantly eased the city's traffic congestion. The city's expansion plans include new energy, water and sewerage infrastructure, to enhanced digital connectivity and new Metro, rail and road schemes. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the West Bengal government work together to improve the city's infrastructure.
