Introduction

Kilis is a city located in southeastern Turkey, on the border with Syria. The city is known for its warm climate, beautiful scenery, and its strategic location. Kilis has a long history, dating back to the Hittites who controlled the area in the late Bronze Age. It has also been ruled by the Assyrians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. The modern city was founded in the 16th century by the Ottomans and has since become an important trading hub.

The city is known for its local cuisine, which features dishes such as kabak cicegi, a dish of zucchini stuffed with meat and spices, and kofte, a minced-meat dish served with rice. The local economy is mainly based on agriculture and small-scale industry, as well as tourism. Kilis also has a number of cultural sites such as the Kilis Castle, the 16th-century Ottoman Mosque, and the Turkish-style bazaar.

Kilis has become an important transit point for Syrians fleeing the country’s civil war, and the city’s population has almost doubled since 2011. The influx of refugees has put a strain on the local infrastructure and economy; however, the local government has been doing its best to ensure refugees have access to basic services. Kilis is an interesting and vibrant city with a unique blend of cultures, and it is well worth a visit for anyone looking for an authentic Turkish experience.

Data and Facts

Throughout the centuries, Kilis has experienced many significant historical events that shaped the city and the region. In the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire conquered Kilis, making it part of their new empire. In the 19th century, Kilis was heavily damaged during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. In World War I, the city was occupied by the French and British forces and became a major base for the Allied powers. During World War II, Kilis was occupied by German forces and was the site of several battles. In the 1960s, Kilis experienced a wave of immigration from nearby Syria, in part due to the political unrest in the region. This led to the formation of a large Syrian-Kilisian population in the city.

Kilis was heavily damaged during the Syrian Civil War in 2012 when the city was occupied by rebel forces. In 2015, the city was the site of a deadly suicide bombing that left over 50 people dead and many more injured. In the aftermath of the attack, the Turkish government implemented security measures in Kilis, including the installation of surveillance cameras and checkpoints.

Today, Kilis is a thriving city that is home to a diverse population of people from Turkey, Syria, and other countries. Despite the violence and destruction of the past, Kilis is a peaceful and vibrant place to live.
