Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, is situated in the center of the country. Kigali is one of Africa's newest cities and one of the most modern. It serves as Rwanda's economic, transportation, and cultural centre. Since its establishment in 1907, Kigali has been a city that welcomed a diversity of cultures and identities. It is renowned for its cleanliness, safety, orderliness and hospitality. Kigali is home to many expatriates because of its beauty and favorable business environment. The city is adorned with many monuments and memorials of Rwanda's history such as the Genocide Memorial Centre at Gisozi, which attracts many tourists and researchers each year.
Census in Rwanda is done after every 10 years and 2012 was the last time that it was conducted. The next census is scheduled for 2022. According to the 2012 census, Kigali had a population of 1,132,686. Compared to other cities in Rwanda, Kigali is considered to be more diverse. When it comes to religious beliefs, Kigali is known to be diverse as well, with the majority of the population subscribing to Christianity, followed by Islam and traditional beliefs. English, French, Kinyarwanda and Swahili are the main languages spoken in Kigali. Kigali is also known for being one of the cleanest cities in Africa, with a ban on non-biodegradable plastic and a mandatory community cleaning exercise once a month.
Kigali is governed by a city council who appoints an executive committee to run the day to day operations of the city. The city is divided into three districts namely Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge. These districts are autonomous and have their own district councils and mayors who manage the district independently from the City of Kigali. The city enjoys a high degree of administrative autonomy and is able to enact its own laws and policies.
Kigali is the major economic hub of Rwanda. It is a city with a robust economy and a rapidly growing IT and real estate sector. Kigali's GDP is estimated to be 60% of the national GDP. The city is a major center for commerce, services, transport and it is emerging as an important center for information technology and finance. Kigali is also the main port of entry and exit for goods and serves as Rwanda's primary business and administrative capital.
Kigali is a city with modern infrastructure. The Kigali City Master Plan focuses on the development of efficient transport, water and sanitation systems and the provision of affordable housing. The city is also set to complete the construction of the Kigali Innovation City, a technology hub that aims to drive digital transformation across Africa. Sewerage infrastructure, solid waste management systems and urban roads are being developed under the Kigali City Master Plan.
