Karachi is the largest city of Pakistan and the main seaport and financial hub of the country. It’s situated in the south of Pakistan along the Arabian Sea. Karachi is among the most culturally diverse of the world’s cities and one of the most cosmopolitan. It is the country’s economic, transportation, and cultural centre. Karachi is renowned for influencing other cities around Pakistan. It is famous for its astounding colonial-era architecture and modern structures that stand side by side to complement each other. Some of the places that make it famous include the iconic Mazar-e-Quaid, Clifton Beach, National Museum of Pakistan, Mohatta Palace, and the historic Empress Market.
According to the 2017 census, Karachi had a population of 16,051,521. Compared to other cities in Pakistan, Karachi is considered to be more diverse. The city is known to be diverse in terms of religious beliefs as well, with most people identifying themselves as Muslims, but it also houses a significant number of Christians, Hindus, and Parsis. The official language of Karachi is Urdu, but a significant number of people also speak Sindhi, Punjabi, Pashto, Balochi, and English. Karachi has many interesting facts such as it is home to the largest ambulance network in the world, run by Edhi Foundation. Karachi also has Pakistan's tallest skyscraper, Bahria Icon Tower. The Port of Karachi is one of the largest and busiest ports in South Asia.
The administration of Karachi is coordinated by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), headed by a mayor. It is further divided into six district municipal corporations, each having its own mayor. The KMC is responsible for the management of public infrastructure and services in the city. This includes the maintenance of roads, bridges, public buildings, parks, and sewerage systems. The city's administration also includes the Karachi Development Authority, which is responsible for the planning and development of the city. Additionally, the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board manages the supply of potable water to the city's inhabitants.
Karachi is considered as the financial and commercial capital of Pakistan. The city generates approximately 20% of Pakistan's GDP, and hosts the headquarters of many national and international corporations. Its economy is broadly diversified with a good blend of trade, transportation, industries, media and IT businesses. Karachi is home to two of Pakistan's largest seaports, the Port of Karachi and Port Bin Qasim, which handle a significant amount of cargo annually. Karachi Stock Exchange is the largest stock exchange in Pakistan, and it attracts investors from all over the country.
Karachi has a vast infrastructure and is a major hub of Pakistan's highway, railway, and maritime networks. The city is served by a domestic and international airport, the Jinnah International Airport. The Karachi Port and Port Bin Qasim are major seaports of Pakistan. The city's public transport infrastructure includes buses, a light rail system, and an extensive network of taxis and rickshaws. The Karachi Circular Railway, which was an important component of the public transport network, is currently under rehabilitation and is expected to add a further boost to the city's infrastructure.
