Jaipur is governed by the Jaipur Municipal Corporation. The Mayor of Jaipur, who has executive powers, is elected by the residents of the city. The Municipal Corporation is responsible for strategic planning, policing, the fire service, most aspects of transport and economic development. On the other hand, the local administration is also carried out by the District Collector and District Magistrate of Jaipur. They are responsible for local services not overseen by the Municipal Corporation, such as local planning, schools, social services, local roads and refuse collection. The Jaipur district is divided into several administrative units, including tehsils, blocks, and gram panchayats.

Economy

Jaipur has always been a commercial city and today enjoys the status of having one of the largest city economies in Rajasthan. The city thrives in trade and commerce and has a vibrant culture seeped in commerce. It has a significant contribution to the state's GDP. The size of its economy is larger than that of several Indian states. Jaipur is also known for its gems and jewelry business and it is one of the world's largest centres for gemstone polishing.

Infrastructure

The Jaipur Development Authority took positive steps with its Master Plan 2025. It identifies a range of infrastructure priorities for Jaipur, from new energy, water and sewerage infrastructure, to enhanced digital connectivity and new road, rail and bus schemes. Some of the investment is provided by the private sector, through the privatized utilities. This has generally worked well in Jaipur, although business is particularly concerned at the lack of capacity in digital infrastructure. The take-up of high speed broadband by business is low compared to other Indian cities.
