Dar es Salaam is the largest city and former capital of Tanzania. It’s situated on the eastern coast of Tanzania, along the Indian Ocean. Dar es Salaam is among the fastest growing cities in the world and one of the most cosmopolitan in East Africa. It is the country’s economic, transportation, and cultural centre. Since its foundation in the mid-19th century, Dar es Salaam has influenced other cities around the region. It is famous for its fascinating blend of African, Arab, and European cultures, as well as its bustling markets, expansive beaches, and historical structures, such as the State House, the National Museum, and the St. Joseph's Cathedral.
The administration of Dar es Salaam is coordinated by the Dar es Salaam City Council, which is in charge of administrative duties and the provision of municipal services. The city is divided into three districts, each administered by a Municipal Council. These Municipal Councils are responsible for local services such as education, healthcare, and waste management. The Mayor of Dar es Salaam, who is elected by the members of the City Council, serves as the chief executive of the city. The city council is made up of representatives from various political parties, who are elected by residents.
Dar es Salaam is the economic heart of Tanzania and one of the fastest growing cities in Africa. The city is a major trading hub, with a bustling port that handles millions of tons of cargo each year. It has a GDP of over $14 billion, which is about 40 percent of Tanzania's total GDP. The city’s economy is largely based on the manufacturing and trade of products such as textiles, food products, cement, and pharmaceuticals. It also has a burgeoning tech scene and is home to a number of startups and tech companies.
The city's infrastructure has been improving over the years with the implementation of various development projects. This includes the rapid bus transit system, a new standard gauge railway, and the expansion of the Julius Nyerere International Airport. The city also has several ongoing projects aimed at improving water supply, sanitation facilities, and digital connectivity. Despite these improvements, Dar es Salaam still faces challenges in meeting the infrastructure needs of its rapidly growing population.
