Baghdad is the capital city of Iraq. It’s situated in the central part of the country along the Tigris River. Baghdad is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and one of the most multifaceted. It is the country’s economic, transportation, and cultural center. Since the Middle Ages, Baghdad has been renowned for influencing other cities around the world. It is famous for its astounding historical monuments and modern structures that coexist side by side. Some of the places that make it famous include the amazing ancient buildings, Al-Mutanabbi Street, Baghdad Island, the National Museum of Iraq, and the Al-Shaheed Monument.
Baghdad has a rich history and diverse population. According to the 2018 estimates, Baghdad had a population of 7,144,260. Compared to other cities in Iraq, Baghdad is considered to be more diverse. As for religious beliefs, Baghdad is known to be diverse as most people identify themselves as Shia, Sunni, or Christian. According to the data collected during the latest census, the majority of people in Baghdad identified themselves as Shia, followed by Sunnis and a small percentage of Christians. As one of the most diverse cities in the Middle East, Baghdad houses over 7 million residents, who collectively speak multiple languages, including Arabic, Kurdish, Turkmen, and English. The city is also rich in culture and history, with several ancient monuments and structures that attract tourists from around the world.
The administration of Baghdad is divided into two main parts: the Governorate and the Municipality. The Governorate of Baghdad is administered by a governor who is appointed by the central government. The Municipality of Baghdad, on the other hand, is responsible for the daily administration of the city. It oversees the provision of municipal services, the planning and regulation of construction and urban development, and the maintenance of the city’s infrastructure. The municipality is headed by a mayor who is elected by the city council. The city council is made up of representatives from the various neighborhoods of Baghdad.
Baghdad has always been a center of trade and commerce and today enjoys the status of being one of the largest city economies in the Middle East. The city thrives in trade and commerce and has a vibrant culture steeped in commerce. The size of its economy is larger than that of several Middle Eastern nations. The Port of Baghdad handles a significant amount of cargo every year, facilitating international trade.
The Municipality of Baghdad has taken positive steps in planning for growth with the publication of Baghdad’s Infrastructure Plan. It identifies a range of infrastructure priorities for Baghdad, from new energy, water and sewerage infrastructure, to enhanced digital connectivity and new public transportation schemes. Some of the investment is provided by the private sector, through the privatized utilities. This has generally worked well in Baghdad, although there are concerns about the lack of capacity in digital infrastructure. The take-up of high speed broadband by business is low compared to other world cities.
